Announcing date support on !(2016-08-01)

Starting today, you can add dates to Dynalist and search for them!

It’s really simple. To insert a date, type “!” after a space, and a date-picker will pop up. You can either click “Done” or hit Enter after you’ve selected the date and time. We didn’t demo changing the time in the video above — but it’s very straightforward.

To edit an existing date, simply click on it and make changes on the date-picker. Click “Done” or use Enter to make the change.

Finally, to search for dates, use the syntax “within:”. You can do “within:5d” (during the next 5 days), “within:-2w” (during the past 2 weeks), or “within:3m” (during the next 3 months).

Best of all, you can bookmark these searches so that you don’t have to repeat them. Also a friendly reminder that you can switch to bookmarks using the file finder now, and we hope all these combined will improve your workflow! 😊

Related new settings: you can choose between 12-hour and 24-hour clock, with 12-hour clock being the default. You can also choose to add timezone to dates; consider turning this option on if you’re collaborating with people in other timezones.

By the way, there’s a related feature request for Google Calendar integration in our roadmap. Come vote for it if you’re interested!

Thanks to Brandon Bertelsen, Christian A. Garcia, Mike Wittenstein, Nick Wright, DA Southern, Ed Jr, Chris, Oliver Jakoubek for taking the time to give us feedback on the spec for date support. You guys are awesome!

you have made me a very happy camper!!! (had to use Three !!! because i didn’t want the date-picker to pop up inadvertently! hahaha)

I was so excited that, after i discovered the DATE Feature was ready, I had to stay up late and convert my archaic system i had devised for dates to the NEW date system IMMEDIATELY.

congrats to you all. Dynalist is my first stop every day and the place i keep my life design flowing.

keep up the fantastic development. i am excited to be a Pro user as i get to get in on the ground floor to all of the great features your team has in store.

    • Thanks so much for your support and encouragement along the way, really! So happy to know that it helped improving your date system 🙂

The ability to bookmark the search term will basically turn my Dynalist into my Todoist. Plus, Dynalist already has my notes, outlines and projects. No need to go back and forth anymore. Wooohooo!!!

    • That’s exactly what we were aiming for!

Please continue sending us awesome feedback, they’re super helpful! 🙂

Is there a release date for the mobile web app? I put two spaces (because of autocorrect) and then added a “!”, but no menu popped up.

Also, can we have a beta app, even if it’s just a web wrapper of the site?

    • Is there a release date for the mobile web app?

Do you mean a web app or a mobile app? Dynalist is already a web app, and we don’t have a release date for the mobile app as it’s hard to predict. We’ll ship it as soon as we can.

I put two spaces (because of autocorrect) and then added a “!”, but no menu popped up.

I tried two spaces and it seems to work. When is the last time you refreshed? And the date picker is not working on mobile yet, by the way, if you’re trying it on your phone.

Also, can we have a beta app, even if it’s just a web wrapper of the site?

We want to at least add offline capability, otherwise I don’t get the difference between the wrapper and just opening the site in a separate browser window… is it because you don’t want to open a browser…?

I meant for adding a date on the mobile site, as it won’t work.

One of the benefits is that I don’t have to worry about my shortcut disappearing.

        • I meant for adding a date on the mobile site, as it won’t work.

Sorry, the date picker is not optimized for the mobile yet, as it’s a pretty large element, unlike tag autocomplete.

One of the benefits is that I don’t have to worry about my shortcut disappearing.

Hmm, what do you mean by “my shortcut disappearing”? Shortcut being the time picker trigger (“!”)?

          • Nope.jpeg

            Ok, thank you.

I meant the web app’s shortcut, but it’s not a big deal.

          • Ah, I think I know what I mean. Sadly, keyboard shortcuts don’t work on mobile, even if you have an external keyboard.

If there’s some frequently used feature that you would like to access more conveniently on mobile, let us know!

Basically, I like being able to put the app into other folders, at least on Android, and not worry about it being easily removed. It also gets indexed within the app search and becomes harder to forget.

          • I see. Have you tried the “Add to Home screen” option? Sounds like that does exactly what you need.

          • Nope.jpeg

That’s what I meant by shortcut, sorry.

          • Do shortcuts disappear on your phone? That sounds like something that shouldn’t happen. Maybe a bug on our end?

          • Nope.jpeg

Nah, it’s not. I’ll just wait for the app to come out instead.

          • I see! We’ll do our best 🙂

  • EdJr

This is awesome! I didn’t know it would be implemented so quickly. Looking forward to offline support and the Android app! I’ll need nothing else 😀

By the way, thanks for your thanks! :p

    • I guess now we’re gonna thank you for thanking our thanks 😛

    Hi,

Is it possible to filter overdue items only?

    Kind regards
    Thomas

    • Hi Thomas,

By “overdue” do you mean including today or excluding today?

      • Thomas

Excluding today. I’m able to filter on overdue + today but did not find out how to filter exclusively on overdue.

        • In theory “until:-1d” should work, but it doesn’t for some reason, and we’re working on a fix.

I figured out two workarounds for now:
          (1) “until:today -since:today”
          (2) “until:-0.1d”

I’ll let you know when we fix this!

          • Thomas

            OK, thanks for the workaround!

  • Alan Chan

hi there! How can I mark an entry with date completed?
