Weekly update: 2017 week #35

This is our weekly update for the 35th week of 2017. The features and fixes might arrive at the desktop and mobile app a few days later than the web version.

Improved

  • [Inbox] Added option to capture to the top of the inbox item rather than the bottom. This option can be found in Settings – Preferences – Your inbox.
  • [Infrastructure] As mentioned in our postmortem, we’ve optimized database indices to make a particularly slow query run much faster to reduce risk for downtime in the future.

Fixed

  • [Sync] Fixed some client sync issues that were related to the downtime last week. We also added warning when sync fails and edited the “make backup” explanation to be clearer to avoid accidental data loss.
  • [Copy/paste] Fixed links sometimes not properly converted to Markdown when pasted into Dynalist.
  • [Referral] We’ve set referral pages to be not indexable by the search engines to prevent referral abuse, after discovering that a referral link appeared as the top result for “dynolist” on Google.
  • [Inbox] Fixed cursor position not being restored after capturing to inbox.
  • [UI/minor] Fixed cannot view created date when hovering the bullet point on desktop app (will be released in the next desktop version).

Weekly update: 2017 week #34

This is our weekly update for the 34th week of 2017. The features and fixes might arrive at the desktop and mobile app a few days later than the web version.

Feature

  • Real-time sync. Now instead of asking the server “is there any changes?” every few seconds, the server “pushes” things to the client whenever there’s change. This is only being tested on the web app right now; soon it will be available on desktop and mobile apps too. (So Francisco you guessed right last week! 👍)

Improved

  • [Infrastructure] On Saturday night, we migrated and scaled our severs as server usage has grown a lot. With the new setup, we expect server availability to be better in the long term.

Fixed

  • [UI/minor] Fixed “Ctrl+Enter” to enter global search doesn’t show up as “Cmd+Enter” on macOS.

Fixed

  • [Search] Fixed items with children don’t properly show the parent bullet (circled dot) in search.
  • [UI/minor] Fixed Up arrow doesn’t work when the cursor is at the beginning of a line in a multi-line item, excepting the first line.
  • [UI/minor] Fixed expand/collapse icon overlaps with the bullet after window is resized to be narrower than really narrow (less than 600px).
  • [UI/minor] Fixed left pane becomes empty after window is resized to be narrower than really narrow (less than 600px).

Improved

  • [Mobile] After making lots of changes on web or desktop, now on mobile all these changes will be applied together at once rather than applied one by one. Coming in the next mobile app release!
  • [UI/minor] Improved responsiveness of dragging and dropping items and now it’s 4 times faster! Shout-out to Rudi Chen for letting us know about this inefficiency.

Fixed

  • [Print] Fixed Shortcuts & Formatting Help section gets printed when it’s present.
  • [Print] Fixed bullet point of the currently hovered item gets printed in Article View.

Fixed

  • [Copy paste] Fixed copy paste not working in Firefox when using Ctrl+A to select all the text in an item.

Weekly update: 2017 week #28

This is our weekly update for the 28th week of 2017. The features and fixes might arrive at the desktop and mobile app a few days later than the web version.

Improved

  • [Performance] Huge performance improvement for large documents. Before, all items are loaded into view when you load the document. Now, only the items that you can see are loaded, dramatically reducing load time. This improvement will help mobile apps the most, since phones are not as powerful as computers in most cases (coming to mobile apps soon).
  • [Tag pane] Section in the tag pane are now collapsible.
  • [UI] When the URL points to a zoomed in item and you refresh the page, before you will see the document itself flash by, which is both slow and annoying. Now, the page directly loads the zoomed in item.

Fixed

  • [UI] Fixed cannot scroll the login page on iOS app (coming to iOS app soon).

Weekly update: 2017 week #27

This is our weekly update for the 27th week of 2017. The features and fixes might arrive at the desktop and mobile app a few days later than the web version.

Ongoing

  • Mobile app performance investigation: we’ve identify two major problems and we’re fixing the second issue. Basically, we want to hide items that are not shown so that performance can be dramatically improved for larger documents. This requires us to rewrite the list layout entirely, which we’re almost finished with. This also caused a few hiccups most of which we’ve fixed. This week we’ll finish up the rewrite and move on to implement the performance improvement.

Improved

  • [Sharing] Added sharing menu option to the document root item in addition to the right click menu of a file in the left pane, to make sharing more discoverable and convenient. So if you want to share a file now, there’s no need to go find the file in the left pane any more.
  • [UI/minor] Made icons more consistent in terms of size for images, internal links, dates, etc.

Fixed

  • [Parsing] Only exclude colons in a tag when there’s space following it. So in “#tag: text” only “#tag” is recognized as a tag, and in “#tag:color” the entire “#tag:color” is recognized a tag. This change is made because some people rely on the “#key:value” syntax.
  • [UI/minor] Fixed font preference is not applied in certain places in the app, for example, the “Move to” dialog, “Insert internal link” dialog, and the dragged file title text.
  • [UI/minor] Fixed cursor misalignment problem in Firefox. It was one of the hiccups caused by our recent layout rewrite.
  • [UI/minor] Fixed “is:completed” search operator not behaving when the user accidentally checks off the root item of the document, since it’s not noticeable on the UI.
  • [UI/minor] Fixed “What’s New” menu cannot be closed by clicking on the speaker icon again.

Weekly update: 2017 week #26

This is our weekly update for the 26th week of 2017. The features and fixes might arrive at the desktop and mobile app a few days later than the web version.

Ongoing

  • Mobile app performance investigation. We’ve received several reports about how the app freezes or crashes when there are too many items in a document. We’re looking into the problem!

Feature

  • Ctrl+click to select non-adjacent items. After that you can use the menu options or keyboard shortcuts to apply bulk commands to the selected items. (Coming soon to the desktop app)

Fixed

  • [Link parsing] Fixed URL includes closing parenthesis.
  • [Google Calendar] Fixed all-day events having incorrect end date for certain third party apps (see details in this forum post).
  • [UI/minor] Fixed note jumps by a few pixels when it gets focused onto.
